Die Provinz gehörte zur Diözese Gallien, die Teil der übergeordneten Präfektur Gallien und Britannien war. Die zivile Verwaltung lag in den Händen eines Statthalters, der dem Vicarius der Diözese und dem Prätorianerpräfekten in Trier unterstand. Die militärische Sicherung wurde zunächst von römischen Befehlshabern wie dem Dux Germaniae primae, dem Dux Mogontiacensis in Mainz und dem Comes tractus Argentoratensis in Straßburg organisiert. Im Verlauf des späten 5.
